Heat pump research at ISFH: interdisciplinary energy systems

Heat pumps use renewable electrical energy to supply thermal energy systems. Our research focuses on interdisciplinary questions concerning the optimal operating behavior and component selection of modern heat pump systems. The focus is directed specifically toward the inner workings of the heat pump: refrigerants, the thermodynamic cycle, and components including control systems.

For theoretical analysis, we use a dynamic simulation environment based on Modelica.

This allows for detailed analysis of:

  •  Cycle efficiency and efficiency potential
  • Control behavior under realistic conditions
  • Operational optimization and component design

In parallel, our application-oriented test benches are used for the experimental characterization of:

  • Air-to-water and brine-to-water heat pumps
  • Performance curves and control responses
  • Comparison of real operating data with simulation results

In this way, we ensure the applicability of scientific insights to real-world applications.

Research focus at a glance:

  • Selection and functioning of modern refrigerants
  • Optimization of the thermodynamic cycle
  • Validation of simulations in realistic test environments
  • Support for development through dynamic investigations on prototypes

Through this work, we promote advancements in heat pump technology and contribute to improving energy efficiency in the building sector.
