Heat pumps connect the research groups for electrical and thermal energy systems. This interdisciplinary connection leads to research questions focused on the optimal operating behavior and component selection of heat pumps. The focus lies on the internal workings of the heat pump – including the refrigerant, the thermodynamic cycle, and the components along with the control system.

For theoretical analyses, a dynamic simulation environment based on Modelica is available. In practical terms, experimental setups are used to characterize air-to-water and brine-to-water heat pumps.
