integraTE-XL: PVT collectors & heat pumps for energy-efficient buildings

The BMWE-funded research project integraTE-XL aims to establish and scale innovative photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) collectors and heat pump systems in the German building sector. The objective is to drive decarbonization in both heating and electricity through intelligent, integrated solutions.

Building on the results of the completed IntegraTE project, integraTE-XL focuses on large multi-family residential buildings and existing commercial properties.

To achieve this, integraTE-XL develops practical tools for planning and system design, defines quality assurance measures, and promotes knowledge transfer along the entire implementation chain – from project development to operation. At the same time, the project analyzes scaling potential in order to accelerate market adoption of the technology and to provide targeted input for policy frameworks (e.g., funding programs, standardization, and the German Building Energy Act – GEG).

The project brings together partners from research, industry, and the housing sector to jointly develop scalable, real-world solutions. International collaboration is supported through active participation in the IEA SHC Task “PVT Heating Systems.”

Project objectives of integraTE-XL

The four-year initiative pursues several key objectives:

- Overcoming market barriers by supporting and initiating PVT system projects throughout HOAI service phases 0–8 to promote market adoption.

- Measuring and evaluating selected systems in terms of energy efficiency, CO₂ savings, and levelized cost of heat.

- Developing web-based planning and design tools to facilitate access to PVT heat pump technology.

- Creating informational materials for various target groups, including planners, craftsmen, energy consultants, and housing associations.

- Disseminating practical insights to strengthen market readiness.

Why is integraTE-XL relevant?

In the light of the German government's climate targets, the combination of renewable electricity and heat generation represents a key lever. PVT collectors, when combined with intelligent heat pump technology, offer significant potential, particularly in urban environments.

Heat pump comparison tool

The heat pump comparison tool enables end users and operators of single- and multi-family homes to make an initial assessment of various heat pump systems during the early planning phase.

The simulations are based on validated components using TRNSYS, and the economic analysis is carried out in accordance with VDI 2067.
