The Electrical energy systems research group studies and develops cross-sectoral supply concepts for buildings and neighborhoods, aiming to intelligently couple electricity and heat while maximizing the share of renewable energy in meeting energy demand.

Research focus: renewable energy systems

We work on innovative solutions for the renewable energy supply of single-family and multi-family homes. Our main focus is on the optimal integration and control of:

  • Photovoltaic systems
  • Battery storage systems
  • Heat pumps

The goal is to efficiently optimize energy consumption, CO₂ emissions, and costs – both in new buildings and existing structures.

Intelligent coupling & system control

A central element of our work is the development of control strategies for managing complex, cross-sectoral energy systems. These strategies are based on real-time data and aim to ensure maximum system efficiency and operational reliability.

Monitoring in the laboratory and the field

High-resolution measurement data from the real-world operation of building energy systems – from individual buildings to entire neighborhoods – allow for detailed analysis of the behavior of individual components, such as heat pumps or battery storage systems, as well as the performance of entire systems.

For scientific field studies, our research group develops customized monitoring concepts. This includes the conceptual development of the monitoring system comprising both hardware and software, the setup of measurement hardware and the database environment, and the operation of the system with data acquisition and analysis.
