Solar-activated profiled glass for electricity and heat generation: development and evaluation in buildings

duration

promotion

This project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) under grant number 03EN1089D.

The SOLARPRO joint project aims to investigate the solar activation of profiled glass using photovoltaics (PV), its integration into the building envelope and the energy grid, and its holistic energy assessment. In addition, solutions for the automated and flexible production of BIPV are being developed. Instead of developing building-integrated PV as alternative or even additional facade elements, the use of solar radiation will be integrated into an existing, established, and highly standardized facade element. This greatly simplifies the integration of PV into the building envelope and also enables the renovation of existing profiled glass facades with a compatible replacement of inactive elements with solar-active elements. For the production of BIPV modules, a highly flexible, automated stringer and the associated layup system are being developed for the precise placement of the strings and their cross-connection. Solutions for the industrial production of facade elements and their integration into the building envelope are being developed. This includes integration into the building's electrical system. Through the participation of the various companies, potential obstacles in the process and on the construction site are identified and solutions for an efficient process are developed with the help of an advisory board consisting of craftsmen, architects, and construction managers. With the help of a simulation environment for complex facade elements, which is to be further developed, the facade is evaluated holistically in terms of electricity and heat, and the CO2 savings are analyzed. The focus of the work at ISFH is on the further development of processes for laminating profiled glass, the development of methods for the holistic energy assessment of transparent and opaque components and their interactions in the building system. In addition, the interfaces between the production of customized PV elements and digital building planning are addressed.
