The strategic flagship project “Trends and Perspectives of Energy Research” is part of the consultation process for the 7th Energy Research Programme. In the project, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi), two research consortia highlighted the status, perspectives as well as the innovation and market potential of different energy technologies.
In the subproject “Technologies for energy transition – research requirements and market potential”, a bottom-up approach was used to carry out a multi-criteria analysis under the leadership of the Research Association for Renewable Energies and the Fraunhofer ISI in order to evaluate the technologies relevant for the energy transition. In addition to an assessment of Germany’s degree of innovation and development in the international context, the associated potential for industrial policies should also be derived and gaps in innovation identified. In addition, criteria have been developed that allow funding sources to make transparent decisions on promising pilot and demonstration projects. The final results in the form of technology reports, which are divided into eight different subject areas, were presented by the scientists of the flagship project in December 2017.
In the project consortium, the ISFH was responsible for the evaluation of the research topic “Solar Heat and Cooling”. This topic covers technologies for solar collectors, heat and cold storage and system technology with the applications of decentralised space heating and DHW supply, process heat, cooling and grid-connected heat supply. The conclusion is that there is increasing market potential both in Germany and internationally. Germany as a research location occupies a leading international position in research in the entire field of technology and thus contributes to the competitiveness of German industry. There are research and development needs in the area of further development of current products with regard to efficiency and cost reductions and in the area of the development of new technologies.
Other research topics from the area of “renewable energies”, which were also examined in the consortium, are biomass, deep geothermal energy, photovoltaics, solar thermal power plants, wind energy with an excursion into ocean energy and environmental heat. The technology reports have been published by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) on the website www.energieforschung.de and are available free of charge.
